Comparing London Kitchen Companies

Most London kitchen quotes look similar on the front page and differ enormously underneath. This is how a direct-from-the-maker kitchen compares with a showroom, a retail chain and an independent designer — on price structure, lead time, accountability and finish, so you can read the quotes you already have properly.

Showroom vs maker

A showroom sells cabinetry it did not build and installs it with a crew it does not employ. Each hand-off carries a margin and a place to point when something is wrong. We draw the kitchen, build it in our own London workshop and fit it with our own joiners — one contract, one number to call.

— 02

Retail chain vs bespoke

Chain kitchens are configured from fixed module sizes, so awkward walls end up filled with panels and the run never quite reads as one plane. Bespoke means the cabinet is made to the survey: full-height fronts, scribed ends, and appliance housings drawn around the appliance you actually chose.

— 03

Independent designer vs in-house team

An independent designer produces beautiful drawings and then hands them to a manufacturer and a fitter. The detail that survives depends on who reads them. Our designers sit next to the joiners who build the drawing, so what is specified is what arrives.

— 04

What actually drives the price

Not the brand on the door. Carcass construction, front material and finish, hardware, stone selection and the amount of hand work. We price each kitchen individually against the drawing, itemised, so you can see where the money goes and change it.

— 05

Lead time, honestly

Retail kitchens frequently quote ten to fourteen weeks because the order queues behind a factory schedule you have no visibility of. Our workshop is ours: three to four weeks from signed drawings to a finished, fitted kitchen.

— 06

What to ask any company you compare us with

Who manufactures the cabinets? Who employs the fitters? Can I see the workshop? Can I choose the stone slab myself? If the answers involve three different companies, you are buying coordination risk as well as a kitchen.

— Four weeks, one team

Survey to handover in three to four weeks

  1. Week 01

    Consultation & survey

A senior designer visits, measures and listens. No showroom, no scripted pitch.

  2. Week 02

    Design & technical drawings

Layout, materials and every reveal drawn to a 0.2mm tolerance, then priced.

  3. Week 03

    Workshop build

German cabinetry hand-finished by our own joiners in our London workshop.

  4. Week 04

    Installation & stone

Fitted by the team that built it. Templated, installed, calibrated, handed over.

— Questions

Before you enquire

Is buying direct from the maker cheaper than a kitchen showroom?

It removes the retail margin and the subcontracted-fitting margin, so more of your budget goes into materials and hand work rather than overheads. We price every kitchen individually against the drawing rather than to a headline figure, so the comparison is made line by line.

How do I compare kitchen quotes fairly?

Compare carcass construction and thickness, front material and finish, hardware brand, worktop material and edge detail, appliance allowance, and whether installation, strip-out and making good are included. Two quotes are only comparable when those lines match.

How long does a bespoke kitchen take compared with a retail one?

We work to three to four weeks from signed drawings: survey and design, workshop build, then installation. Retail suppliers commonly quote ten to fourteen weeks because manufacture sits in an external factory queue.

Who is responsible if something goes wrong?

We are. Design, manufacture and installation are all in-house, so there is no split between supplier and fitter and no dispute about whose defect it is.

Can I visit the workshop before committing?

Yes. You are welcome to see cabinetry being built and finished, and to see the standard of work before anything is signed.

Do you use German cabinetry like the big London showrooms?

Yes — German-engineered carcasses and hardware, hand-finished and sprayed in our London workshop, then fitted by our own team.

How long does a Dominus kitchen take?

Three to four weeks from signed drawings — consultation and survey, design, workshop build, then a single installation week.

Do you subcontract the fitting?

Never. The joiners who build your kitchen in our London workshop are the ones who install it in your home.

How much does a bespoke kitchen cost?

Every kitchen is individually priced against your drawings. You will have an indicative figure within 12 hours of the consultation.
