One surface instead of two
Most open-plan rooms end up with an island and a table doing the same job badly. Here the island is extended in solid oak to dining height and length, so a family of six can eat at it and the room keeps its floor space.
Where a separate table is wanted, the island is drawn shorter and the two are aligned on a single axis with matched timber. German cabinetry, |hand-finished in London| by one team.
Oak, joinery and comfort
The dining extension is solid oak — 40 mm, with a softened arris and an oiled finish that can be sanded back after years of use. Knee clearance is set at 700 mm and the overhang at 400 mm so chairs tuck properly.
Neutral joinery, quiet perimeter
The perimeter is painted in a warm neutral so the oak island is the only strong material in the room. Tall storage absorbs the ovens, larder and fridge-freezer, leaving the working wall low and open.
Pendants and light
Brass pendants are hung at 750 mm above the dining section — a table height rather than a worktop height — and run on their own dimmer so the eating end can be lit independently of the cooking end.

Asked often.
Can you really eat at an island comfortably?
Yes, with 700 mm knee clearance and a 400 mm overhang. Those two dimensions are what separate a usable dining island from a breakfast bar people avoid.
Is solid oak durable enough for a dining surface?
Very. It marks, but unlike stone it can be sanded and re-oiled in place, so it recovers rather than degrades.
How much does an oak dining kitchen cost in London?
Most projects fall between £34,000 and £84,000 fitted, including the oak dining extension. No middlemen.
