The island as a cast object
The centrepiece is a concrete-surfaced island — either a poured GRC top over a steel frame, or a hand-trowelled microcement skin applied on site over a rigid substrate. Both give the depth and slight tonal variation that no printed slab reproduces.
Because the surface is hand-applied, each island carries small trowel movements. We agree the finish sample with you before application and seal the surface with a food-safe penetrating sealer.
Steel, storage and structure
Wall storage is deliberately open: hot-blackened steel shelving on welded brackets, sized for the objects a working kitchen actually uses. Base storage is entirely deep drawers with 70 kg runners, so the open elevation does not cost usable volume. All fabricated by |one team| — no subcontractors.
Warmth against hard surfaces
Concrete and steel need timber to be liveable. Warm oak flooring, oak drawer interiors and a timber breakfast section on the island supply it — without them the room reads as a workshop rather than a kitchen.
Lighting and durability
Task lighting is high-CRI at 3000 K under every shelf, with a dimmable pendant run over the island. Concrete surfaces are resealed every two to three years; microcement can be locally repaired and re-sealed without replacing the top.

Asked often.
Is concrete practical as a worktop?
Sealed concrete is durable but porous by nature — it will develop a patina. If you want the look with no upkeep, we specify concrete-effect porcelain instead.
Can the concrete crack?
Hairline crazing is characteristic of the material rather than a defect. GRC over a steel frame minimises movement, and microcement can be repaired locally.
How much does a concrete island kitchen cost in London?
Most projects fall between £36,000 and £88,000 fitted, depending on the concrete method and metalwork. No middlemen.
