A kitchen designed for evening light
Brass Evening began with a simple observation: London townhouse kitchens are used most heavily after dark, yet almost all of them are specified against daylight. This scheme inverts that — warm neutral paint, dark stone and brass all gain depth under artificial light rather than flattening out.
The layout is intentionally intimate. Runs are shorter, the island is scaled for conversation rather than commercial prep, and glazed cabinets carry glassware where it can be reached without opening a door in front of a guest.
Joinery and the ribbed glass detail
In-frame painted cabinetry sets the base register, with ribbed and reeded glass fronts on selected wall and dresser units. Ribbed glass obscures contents without hiding them, which keeps the elevation lively without demanding perfectly styled shelves inside.
Every glazing bar is solid timber rather than an applied grid, and glass is bedded in putty and back-beaded in the traditional way. Built and fitted by |one team|.
Brass, and how it should age
Hardware is unlacquered brass throughout: bin pulls, knurled knobs, a bridge mixer and the shelf brackets carrying the open display run. Unlacquered brass darkens with handling and can be polished back at any point, so the kitchen records its own use.
Brass is used in three weights — hardware, tapware and lighting — which keeps it reading as a deliberate material rather than a finish applied uniformly to everything.
Hosting from the same room
A drinks cabinet with an internal brass rail and lit interior sits at the end of the run; a second sink and an undercounter cooler mean drinks never cross the cooking zone. Bin storage, recycling and the dishwasher are grouped so clearing up happens in one place.
The island seats three comfortably and four at a push, with a 350 mm overhang and a socket run concealed under the apron.

Every kitchen we build is drawn to a specific room and a specific way of cooking. These are the modifications clients most often make to this model — the list is not exhaustive.
Colour and paint modifications
Warm neutral is the default register; deeper tones suit rooms with strong evening lighting.
- Any Farrow & Ball, Little Greene or Paint & Paper Library colour
- Mushroom, clay, bone, deep olive or ink-blue schemes
- Contrasting island or contrasting dresser unit
- Painted or stained cabinet interiors behind glazed doors
Metalwork and glass
Metal sets the register of the room more than any other element.
- Unlacquered brass, polished nickel, antique bronze or pewter
- Ribbed, reeded, fluted, antiqued or clear glass fronts
- Brass mesh grilles in place of glazing
- Bespoke brass shelf brackets, plate racks and pot rails
Entertaining and appliances
The scheme is built around hosting from within the kitchen itself.
- Lit drinks cabinet, wine wall or undercounter wine cabinet
- Second prep sink and integrated ice maker
- Range cooker: Lacanche, La Cornue, AGA or Everhot

Asked often.
Does unlacquered brass need maintenance?
No maintenance is required — it simply darkens. If you prefer it bright, a brass polish restores it in minutes, or we can supply lacquered brass that holds its original colour.
Is dark stone difficult to keep clean?
Honed dark stone hides marks better than polished. We seal it on installation and supply the correct cleaner; a resealing every two to three years is all that is needed.
How much does a brass and stone kitchen cost in London?
Most projects fall between £36,000 and £88,000 fitted, including cabinetry, stone, brassware and installation. No middlemen.
Can this work in a galley or single-run kitchen?
Yes. Without an island the scheme leans harder on the dresser and glazed run, which often suits narrower townhouse kitchens better than an island would.
